Announcing Futures of Listening

It is with great excitement that we can share this news: our new consortium Futures of Listening will embark on a two-year programme about the future of spatial sound and immersive audio. We are one of five consortia within the Artistic & Design Research for Immersive Experiences (ADRIE) programme of CIIIC and the Creative Industries Fund NL.

Spatial sound offers new sensory experiences and ways of collective listening– immersive stories that unfold through space, movement, and perception rather than a singular and linear progression. This opens up possibilities to explore shared imaginations, a deeper sense of connection to place, and attune our bodies to a more-than-human world.

Through four interconnected research areas, Futures of Listening will create space for experimentation and research. We will explore how this rapidly growing form of art calls for new instruments, accessible systems and interdisciplinary collaborations, while asking how spatial sound can become more inclusive, and open to diverse ways of hearing.

By engaging artists, researchers and students with these questions, we aim to show how spatial sound can both express and generate forms of meaning. At the heart of the project sits a residency programme that, through curated and open call selections, will provide space for the development of immersive knowledge, new interfaces and productions. Results can be experienced through listening events, symposia, community meetups, workshops, media, and various collaborations.

There is much more to tell and listen to, but that will all come in due course. Right now, we are very grateful to our partners, supporters and CIIIC/Creative Industries Fund NL for making all this happen. More to come!
